Congratulations to Repeat Buyers in 2012

One of the most satisfying times in business is helping repeat customers...2012 has kicked off well on this front

CONGRATULATIONS to Marcus & Kimberly Berlyn who have now purchased 150 front paddock, top notch Santa Gertrudis Heifers (nsm & ptic) from Riverslea. Some of the heifers are on the point of calving with the balance ready for a June joining - exciting times for the Berlyn family with their new venture.

CONGRATULATIONS to Bruwin Pastoral who have added another three Stud Santa Gertrudis Heifers (ptic) to Riverslea Digger (poll) to their previous purchase of stud and upgrading heifers from Riverslea's 2011 on Farm Sale. We're sure to be seeing some quality young bulls coming from this new stud in the next couple of years.

CONGRATULATIONS to Kevin & Judy Dobson who took the opportunity at our field days to add two ptic Santa Gertrudis heifers to their previous purchase of pure and crossbred heifers. All quality outfits that they can enjoy.

CONGRATULATIONS to Angie Dure who continues to expand her "Red Cattle Herd", this time with another four heifers.

DPI Research Confirms What We've Been Breeding & Selecting For...

DPI research conducted by PhD student Linda Cafe, has now scientifically proven what we've been breeding, selecting cattle, and managing our farms for. Cattle that are calmer "grow more quickly than temperamental ones and produce larger, better finished carcases with more tender meat."

We'll also add that they are easier and safer to handle than temperamental cattle!

Customer Catch Up - II

Alan had the pleasure to catch up with Allan Jobling at his farm in Macorna. Allan purchased herd Bull Riverslea Craftsman from one of our Beef Week field days. The bull has grown out really well and developed plenty of muscle. His calves are outstanding. Full credit to Allan on the quality and health of his Hereford cow herd. Look at the growth and quality of the crossbred calves....!

Grading Up Herd & Cross Breeding - Will& Monica Hood

Alan recently had a whirlwind trip to catch up with some customers. First property visit was Rosevale, home to Brett & Jacinta Singe. The Singe family purchased a bull from Riverslea at the Finley sale. They are using him over pure and cross bred females, with the aim of increasing the quality and depth of their herd - they're getting those results plus more.

Next visit was to Southern Star Santa Gertrudis Stud NSW. Alan & Claire McCormack purchased a stud bull and heifers from Riverslea. Riverslea Deputy was Champion Junior bull at National Beef 2010. He is doing the job for them with upgrading their pure Santa Gertrudis herd. Alan aims to breed his own bulls down the track and use them over his Angus herd to produce bullocks for the export market.

Final visit was at the foot hills of the snow covered Mount Beauty. What a spectacular spot! Will and Monica Hood are looking to upgrade their Santa Gertrudis herd. They purchased heifers from Riverslea as well as stud bull Riverslea Crusader. Crusader is also used over their Hereford cows with great success. Riverslea will hold a field day in conjunction with the Hood family in Autumn in 2013 to show case the Santa Gertrudis breed.

Winning Group of 3 Santa Gertrudis cattle

18 month old Riverslea Eclipse swept all before him to win his Junior Bull class, Champion Junior Bull, Grand Champion Bull and then Supreme Santa Gertrudis exhibit at National Beef 2011. It was the first show for this mighty young bull out of a terrific cow from the Kendara herd and by Riverslea Stud Sire Kuloomba 141 (AI) (Poll).

This bull will be offered for sale at our inaugural on Farm Sale - September 9th.

Riverslea Classic took out her age class, Champion Senior Female and Grand Champion Female. She has a 6 month old calf at foot (Riverslea Fish) by home grown stud sire and previous show bull Riverslea Digger. Classic is 3 1/2 with two calves on the ground and 4 months back in calf.

Riverslea Elisha also won her age class.

Time to Trade in the Old Girls?

The Australian cattle market is gaining strength as restockers push prices to near record highs on the back of excellent seasonal conditions around most of the country. The market is also underpinned by strong domestic & export markets, despite the high Australian dollar. Now is a perfect time to trade in older cows and buy replacement heifers. Riverslea sold a cast for age dry cow (curfewed) at Shepparton Market yesterday (5th April 2011) and returned $1410.40 excl gst.

We currently have for sale Santa Gertrudis & SG cross heifers from $750 (plus gst).

Beef Week Field Day - A Great Day Out

We were delighted to host 70 visitors at our Beef Week Field Day. Sold on the day were 50 females and 1 bull. There was strong enquiry for our Spring Bulls. Many people took the opportunity to discuss their bull requirements for 2011 and beyond.

It was also the first chance for breeders to see the first progeny from Riverslea Digger & Riverslea Dynamite. The feedback on these young sires and their calves is excellent.

Melbourne Royal Show 2010

Riverslea was represented by two steers at this years Royal Melbourne Show. The steers were prepared and paraded by students from the Longerenong Agricultural College. Both the steers performed well. Of particular note were the MSA marbling scores.

Riverslea exhibited two entries in the stud stock classes:
Riverslea Digger excelled again and won the Hunter Watson Trophy for the Supreme Santa Gertrudis Exhibit for the second consecutive year.
Riverslea Diamond (accompanied by 2 week old Riverslea Flair) won the Grand Champion Female Santa Gertrudis.

Riverslea featured in all four Championships with the Stud Cattle, including first timer, Riverslea Deputy who took out the hotly contested Champion Junior Bull title. We now offer this bull for sale. Contact us for more details. Riverslea also exhibited: Riverslea Diamond - reserve Champion Senior Female; Riverslea Dixie - reserve Champion Junior Female; Riverslea Digger - Reserve Champion Senior Bull.

In the Carcass competition our steers placed 4^th on the hoof and 5^th on the hook.

The Commercial Cow and Calf competition winner was exhibited by Mark and Jo Conlan - Tumbywood. The calf at 9 months weighed 455kg and blew the competition away with it's prime value score!

This calf, out of a crossbred cow, was sired by a bull from the Riverslea Stud.

We congratulate Mark and Jo on their success.

These results reinforce to us that we are producing bulls that meet the top end commercial requirements.

Alan Judges Southern Brahman Breeders "On Farm Challenge"

Alan has just completed four days judging Brahman cattle on farms across Victoria and South Australia. 110 cattle were lined up in 16 different classes for his inspection and consideration. The "On Farm Challenge" was also used as an opportunity for young associate judges to gain valuable experience assessing and grading cattle with Alan.

Breeders also took the opportunity to present crossbred cattle and other breeds containing Bos Indicus content in the commercial section of the on Farm Challenge. The winners will be announced at the upcoming National Beef - Bendigo May 19th to 23rd, 2010.
