Stud Sires

Kuloomba 193

A big young bull (frame score 10) with a fabulous temperament. Soft skin, neat sheath exceptional weight gain and excellent conformation. This bull is quality through and through. We are very excited by his first calves that are just hitting the ground now….

Kuloomba 129 (AI) “The Studs Quiet Achiever”

This classified stud bull was used extensively in our commercial operation – consistently producing exceptionally well muscled, fast maturing calves out of a broad range of crossbred females.

Kuloomba 129

The outstanding quality of this bull, his depth of breeding and his exceptional success with commercial progeny has lead to him being retained now as a stud sire. Our faith in him was shown as warranted when his first bull progeny, Kuloomba 240 [Poll], the result of a test mating, sold for $5000 at the 2008 Tamworth Northern Breeders sale (vendors Robert & Julie Vise). Kuloomba 129 (AI) has some magnificent stud calves on the ground now that are absolute assets to our stud – true to type, beautifully muscled, early maturing, predominantly polled and soft skinned.

Santa Gertrudis stud: Kuloomba 141

JR, as he is known at the stud, is beautiful bodied, polled bull with heaps of breed character. Another bull chosen for his exceptional weight gain (such a great trait of Kuloomba bulls). Carrying Waco Nightcap genetics this quality true to type bull is used predominantly to upgrade our commercial cows. To date he has produced some stunning S bar stud heifers. His first bull progeny are terrific: true to type, meaty bulls - they are now offered for sale.

Riverslea Chloe and Riverslea Classic

All our stud cattle are independently classified to meet exacting international standards of excellence. The Santa Gertrudis Breeders' (Australia) Association remains the only beef society in Australia to maintain a strictly controlled Herd Classification System.

Stud Philopsophy

Studies have demonstrated that temperament (slow flight times) is positively correlated with meat tenderness, eating quality, feedlot final weights, carcass weights and feed conversion.

Importantly, whilst environment and handling (nurture) has an effect on temperament, the genetic component (nature) of temperament is highly heritable. On a practical level having cattle with excellent temperament ensures handling is low stress and increases safety levels

On a family farm great temperament is vital ...

Feed efficiency underpins much of the success of any commercial operation. Thus we select for cattle with excellent feed efficiency and weight gains. We are also testing for these genes through Catapult genetics (geneSTAR). At the end of the day – good feed efficiency is more dollars in your pocket.

Santa Gerdrudis benefits

Young Santa Gertrudis bull with mother

The benefits of using a Santa Gertrudis Bull in a commercial herd are numerous:

“As a commercial cattleman the benefits you receive using Classified 'S' Santa Gertrudis bulls will become obvious in your first crop of calves. You will see increased muscling, rapid growth, easy calving, higher weaning weights and better overall performance, whether in the paddock or in a feedlot.”

”The use of a Santa Gertrudis bull will introduce heat tolerance, tick resistance, and most importantly, when crossed with British breeds, an immediate drop in the number of losses due to eye cancer and pink eye. In recent years breeders of Santa cattle in Australia's more temperate climates have consistently recorded significant reduction in losses caused by bloat.“

-- Santa Gertrudis Breeders (Australia) Association.

Illustrating Santa Gertrudis maternal instinct!

Santa Gertrudis cows are renowned for their maternal instinct - here one cow in the dry dam bed is 'babysitting' no less than 14 calves while the other cows have headed off to graze in the cool of the morning.
